Supersedeas

1. A writ that suspends the power of a lower court to issue an execution on a judgment where an appeal to a higher court has been taken.
2. In <em>law</em>, a writ having in general the effect of a command to stay, on good cause shown, some ordinary proceedings which ought otherwise to have proceeded.
3. Hence, a stay; a stop.
4. A writ of command to suspend the powers of an officer in certain cases, or to stay proceedings under another writ.
5. A type of <xref>surety bond</xref> that a <xref>court</xref> requires from an <xref>appellant</xref> who wants to delay <xref>payment</xref> of a <xref>judgement</xref> until the <xref>appeal</xref> is over.
