1. A quick stamp of the foot used in fencing as a feint to produce an opening.
2. In fencing, a smart stroke with the blade on the sword of an antagonist on the opposite side to that which he engaged, generally accompanied with a stamp of the foot, used for the purpose of procuring an opening.
3. A stroke on the opponent's foil or sword designed to notify him that the bout is to begin.
4. The stamping of the foot during ceremonial salutes prior to the bout. See salute.
5. A tap or stamp of the foot as a warning of intent to attack; -- called also attack.
